Understanding Hair Shedding & Thinning
It’s normal to lose about 50 to 100 hairs a day. This may seem like a lot, but it’s part of the natural hair growth cycle. Each hair follicle goes through a growth stage and a rest stage. On average, it takes about three to five years for hair to complete this renewal cycle and fall out. This explains why we aren’t all bald – especially considering the average scalp has more than a hundred thousand hair follicles.
If your hair feels like it's thinning or shedding more than usual, there can be several reasons why. A number of factors can affect the hair growth cycle, or cause new hair to grow back finer or weaker. Whatever the reason, noticing a change in your hair can be frustrating for both men and women.
What Can Cause Hair Thinning & Shedding
-
Heredity
If a parent or close relative has experienced thinning hair, you may be more likely to notice similar changes yourself. This type of hereditary hair thinning is common and mainly affects men, though it can affect women too, often from midlife onwards.
-
Hormonal changes
For women, hormonal changes are often an underlying factor in hair thinning. Women are more likely to notice changes in their hair during menopause, after childbirth, and after starting or stopping hormonal birth control.
-
Stress
Have you been feeling particularly stressed lately? Ongoing stress can affect your body's natural balance in ways that may contribute to hair thinning and shedding.
-
Unhealthy Lifestyle
A healthy lifestyle is an important foundation for strong, healthy-looking hair. Poor nutrition can increase the risk of a vitamin and mineral deficiency, and low levels of zinc, iron and vitamin B in particular may affect the quality of your hair.
-
Hair Care & Hair Styling
Frequent use of heat styling tools, or wearing your hair pulled tightly into a ponytail or top knot, can be damaging to your hair over time. This is one of the most common causes of hair thinning in women. Men should also be mindful of wearing tight-fitting hats regularly.
-
General Health & Wellbeing
Changes in your hair can sometimes be linked to your general health. If you're concerned about changes to your hair or scalp, it's always worth having a conversation with your doctor or healthcare provider.
Caring For Thinning Hair
Hair thinning and shedding affects both men and women, and everyone's hair is different. That's why a good hair-care routine matters. To support the condition of your hair, it helps to eat a healthy, balanced diet, stay hydrated, manage stress and exercise regularly.
A healthy lifestyle is a great foundation, but the right hair-care products can also make a difference. Mediceuticals has developed a range of products designed to support the scalp and help hair look and feel fuller. The range includes:
- Shampoo for fine to normal hair
- Shampoo for dry hair and a dry scalp
- Conditioner for normal to dry hair
- A spray to care for the scalp
- A three-step plan that consists of shampoo, conditioner, and spray (for normal and dry hair)

That's why it's worth finding a hair-care routine that works for you sooner rather than later. The right routine, used consistently, can help support healthier-looking, fuller-feeling hair over time.
